Media urged to pay more attention to issues of open governance

Deputy Director of Public Sector Reform Secretariat (PSRS), Mr. Pethuel Danyo has charged Journalists in the country to dedicate their time to monitor and focus more attention and excessively report on issues of open governance rather than just limiting themselves to covering and reporting on events.
According to him, although the media has a major role to play in monitoring and promoting issues of open governance among others which goes a long way to advance the country, its practitioners have limited its powers only on covering events which he believes it’s about time that old habit dies.

“I think it’s about time the media undergoes a paradigm shift from just covering events and be focused on monitoring, debating and giving full attention and bringing to the fore issues of open governance and actively report on them to whip up citizens interest in the matters and to hold government accountable in every way possible”.

Mr. Danyo made the appeal while addressing Journalists at a 1-day media sensitization forum speaking on the topic: The role of the media in making the Open Governance Project work in Ghana held at the Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT on Friday, August 26, 2016 in Accra.

The forum was organized by the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), a non-profit civil organization focused on addressing corruption in all forms in Ghana on the theme: “The role of the media in promoting open governance in Ghana”.

For her part, presenting the overview of GII’s Open Governance Project (OG-P) Programmes Manager of GII, Ms. Mary Awelana Addah stressed the need for all media practitioners in the country to collaborate with other stakeholders in the fight against corruption by actively bringing to the fore issues of open governance and also hold government accountable in every way.

According to her the role of the media is ‘exclusively’ crucial for the successful execution of the open governance project which hinges on the right to access information, accountability, participation and transparency which formed the four pillars of the concept.

She therefore called on the media to help exercise its powers by showing strong support for the open governance project which among others seeks to encourage institutional reforms by governments in order to attain transparency and accountability in the operation of political admiration ultimately serving the interests of all citizens.
