African governments are weak in regulating digital spaces-Adenike Aloba

Image
Program Director of Dataphyte, Adenike Aloba has taken a swipe at African governments for their weakness or inability to properly regulate the digital space, an act which limits the full enjoyment of the freedom and fundamental human rights of the masses. She contends that most of the laws and policies by governments geared towards regulating the digital space in the African context have resulted into a lot of internet shutdowns including attack on press freedom and violation of the rights of journalists and activists among others which have been the trend.   “We’ve seen a lot of journalists being attacked online with bots and being thrown, we’ve seen people being tracked and their things being taken out.  We’ve also seen the African governments turn towards when they don’t understand anything they shut it down and that has been the tendency so no, we can’t say that they’re doing well”. Adenike made this known in an interview with the Human Rights Reporter’s Joseph Wemakor on the si

Lack of protection thwarting human rights fight-Joseph Wemakor

Image
A renowned human rights activist cum seasoned journo, Mr. Joseph Wemakor has taken a swipe at the state authorities for not doing enough to protect the rights and lives of human cum social rights advocates/activists who are committed to championing causes at perils of their lives daily with the aim of bringing about the desired change. According to him, advocacy/activism as major tools for change exposes the advocates/activists to greater risks including loss of dear lives in most cases which requires that maximum protection and support are given them by the authorities to guarantee their safety and security in order to continue to deliver on their mandate towards achieving results. Mr. Wemakor made this known in an interview with Victoria Beeko Danso, host of HB Pulse on Homebase TV, during his appearance to discuss on the topic: “Combating Cruelty against Children 2” on Monday August 29, 2022.   The gleaming morning show among others seeks to throw more light on the woes of the

Tied like an animal to a slaughter: the harrowing story of a teenager

Image
Imagine being crucified by your own parents in a manner which smacks of evil beyond your wildest imagination all in the name of instilling discipline in you. What a price to pay for wrongdoing? And how will you feel? A million dollar questions that would race through any sound mind after a careful look at the ignoble photograph (s) accompanying this publication. This is a harrowing tale of a young girl whose fate hangs precariously in the balance as her woes deepens without getting justice. It is hard to believe such a young innocent girl who could not even hurt a fly should be subjected to a barbaric act of high magnitude of torture and pain in this 21st century where respect for human rights is gradually gaining prominence. I got a distress phone call from a young lady last Sunday afternoon who only introduced herself as Ms. Adepa.  It was just after I had successfully wrapped up on a Television program which discussed how to address issues of human rights violations in Ghana which I

Why the GES must deal ruthlessly with Annor-Adjaye teachers who mercilessly flogged students

Image
It is with utmost regret the Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) reveals that several weeks after it broke the news of the unwarranted abuse and merciless canning which caused bodily harm to nineteen (19) final year students of Annor Adjaye Senior High School at Ezilibo of the Jomoro District of the Western Western Region, no action has been taken by the educational authorities to bring the seven (7) teachers who are alleged to have misconducted themselves by taking such needless action to book.  This revelation comes as a shock after the Western Regional Education Director in the person of Felicia Okai had earlier promised to ensure these teachers are punished for the wrongdoing. “The fact that they have broken the laws there would be repercussions for that. Be rest assured that they would be duly punished”, She stressed while speaking on an Accra based Angel FM’s Anopa Bofo Morning show on Tuesday, May 10 2022. She further hinted that, “we have banned corporal punishment in schools a

We need legal backing to protect the profession and practice- Institute of Surveyors told government

Image
The president of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors ( GhIS) , Surv. Dr. John Amaglo has called on government to help expedite the process that would lead to the passage of Surveying Council Bill into an act to regulate the surveying profession and practice in the country. According to him, the lack of the Surveying Council Act to regulate the space gives room for a lot of influx of companies and firms who are illegally in operation, a situation which is inimical and an affront to the noble profession and good practice since there’s no legal backing to regulate proper conduct.       “If you have the legal backing to protect practice and profession, then you will have the situation where all foreigners coming to the country would liaise with that Council just like we have the Engineering Council which is protecting the surveyors”. Surv. Dr. John Amaglo made the appeal while addressing journalists at the Annual Press Interaction of the Institution held in Accra on Monday February 21
