TTAG Bares Teeth at Gov’t Over Extortion Of Utility Bills From Teacher Trainees

The Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) has raised red flags over wanton extortion of monies from teacher trainees as payment of utility bills by some colleges of education in the country calling for government’s immediate intervention to put a stop to the ‘barbaric’ act.

The association has equally called on gov’t to expedite action and ensure that sanctity prevail to see teacher trainees who have been victimized by such a ploy receives urgent compensation.

At a press conference organized by the association in Accra yesterday, National President of TTAG, Sampson Tagbor criticized government for the woes of the trainees citing its inability to put proper structures in place to deal with the numerous challenges that confront the trainees presently.

He noted gov’t decision to scrap off trainees allowance should not in any way overburden the trainees but rather soften the ground and the systems with regards to the College of Education. Sampson however, questioned gov’t malfunctioning administrative structures put in place to take care of the system. “What system really took care of the same situation in the 1970s when there were no allowances”? he asked.

Teacher trainees in the country are currently being compelled by some colleges of education to pay for utility bills as part of their school fees after government has scrapped off their training allowances.

“Some colleges even compel the trainees to forfeit their examination for failure to pay fees like feeding fee, accommodation fee and transportation fee amongst others which is becoming unbearable for the trainees” said Sampson.

According to him, some colleges are even demanding from the trainees as much as GH₵150.00, GH₵ 165.00 and more for utility bill per semester alongside “exorbitant semester school fees which ranges from GH₵ 1,500.00 to GH₵ 2,400.00, adding trainees cannot afford to pay these monies.

The association has therefore vowed to embark on strike or resort to any form of legal action against government or any college of education that fails to comply with the four point directives below:-

1. Trainees should not pay for feeding fees as components of their bill as it remains the responsibility of the government.

2. Government should refund feeding fees paid by trainees because those monies are long overdue therefore must be paid back immediately.

3. Government should come to the aid of the trainees on the out segment because the overburden financial commitment they are going through as a result of the scrapping of the allowance is just unbearable.

4. In accordance with government’s directives, no teacher trainee should pay for utility bills as part of their school fees.

The Teacher Trainee’s Association of Ghana in a statement said, “Mr. President, respectfully have compassion on these trainees in this untold hardship as you continue to have compassion on one another”.
