Chartered Accountants are not Corrupt-ICAG President

The President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana, Professor Boasiako Omane-Antwi has debunked the allegation of a recent news piece which seeks to condemn and brand accountants as corrupt.

Prof. Boasiako Omane-Antwi  President of  Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana,

The alleged report also indicated that accountants are not supportive of any change agenda.

But Prof. Omane-Antwi argued that Accountants are not corrupt however; the system and moral character of some individuals are to blame.

“Truly Chartered Accountants are not corrupt….the system and the moral character of some human beings in Ghana has led some to corruptible practices” he emphasized.

Prof. Omane- Antwi said “It is a systematic problem that has made the country corrupt, spanning from the Ghanaian on the street, to the Ghanaian in the pulpit and the Ghanaian in the relevant responsible position”.

He therefore urged Ghanaians to overhaul moral fabric and change their innate personal characteristics to embrace and uphold ethical standards rooted in value education.

Ethical values, hence value education, provides the foundation on which a civilized society exists he believes but without the foundation, civilization collapses.

He said “The time has come for value education to be taught in Ghana’s educational system from kindergarten 1 to University so that citizens of Ghana can be influenced to uphold standards of ethical performance that will certainly exert a leadership influence on the systems, policies, laws  and the attitudes of societies in mother Ghana”.

This was his remark made at a premier cocktail party held in Accra last Saturday to launch the ICAG’s faculty system.

Prof Omane-Antwi disclosed the establishment of the faculty system was to serve as an answer to speculations and allegations in the light of the potential of being marginalized for failing to respond to the needs of the society.

Thus, chartered Accountants (CAs), through the faculty system, can play their advocacy role by responding to public debates on accountancy, finance and also respond to government and regulatory bodies as well as influence domestic and international policy and legislation.

The ICAG faculty system again seeks to provide thought leadership in effort to develop the chartered Accountant Professional skill and to provide advice and advocacy to influence and promote sound accounting practice and accountability in Ghana.

“The ICAG’S faculties will provide its members with up-to-date business ideas; the latest management and decision making tools; unbiased and independent information and help CAs to become an effective part, in fact, act as the ‘DNA’ in their work places” the ICAG boss has said.

Meanwhile, the Council of ICAG has approved the establishment of Financial Reporting, Audit and Assurance, Corporate Financial Management, Corporate Governance, Taxation and Fiscal Policy and Public Financial Management following the launch.

He admonished the CA’s not to yield to the pressures from seen or “unseen hands” and to uphold the core tenet of the profession, which is ‘integrity’.

“We need to play our ‘gate keepers’ role without fear or favour to protect public interest. The credibility of the profession is threatened when the ideas of integrity, independence, and public service and ethical standards come under suspicion” he stressed.
He maintained society believes that the ideal situation of any profession is public service but with monetary rewards playing a minor role and warns against self-interest which can thwart this ideal.

Prof. Kwame Boasiako Omane-Antwi  who is also the Vice Rector and Dean of Graduate School of the Pentecost University College has also used the occasion to sworn-in twelve members who will serve as Deans and Vice Deans of the newly established Faculty system.

They are as follows: - Mr. Ferdinand Gunn-Dean of Audit & Assurance,Mr. Oseini Amui-Vice Dean of Audit & Assurance,Prof. Edward Marfo-Yiadom-Dean of Corporate Financial Management,Dr. Joe France-Vice Dean of Corporate Financial Management, Nana Sackey-Dean of Financial Reporting,Mrs. Nana Abena Adu-Gyamfi-Vice Dean of Financial Reporting,Nii Adumansa Baddoo-Dean of Cororate Governance,Mr. Bernard W.
