Amplify voices, actions; reduce climate awareness gap – UNDP to youth



The Resident Representative at the UNDP Ghana, Silke Hollander has charged the youth to always endeavor to amplify their voices and actions in a bid to help reduce the climate awareness gap to enable a broader section of the society understand how they can contribute to climate action.

She also called for collaborative support on part of every Ghanaian towards ensuring climate action while  focusing on development objectives and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to achieve tackling the challenges of climate change.

“As climate is impacting on livelihoods, health, employment, agriculture, etc. basically none of our development objectives can be achieved in a sustainable way without addressing the challenges of climate change.”

The UNDP boss made this known while delivering her welcome address at the 2019 Social Good Summit (SGS) which was held at the Bank of Ghana Auditorium in Accra on September 18.
This year’s summit which is on the theme: “Take Action to Save The Planet! Climate Change Is Real” resonates with global call on recent climate changes in the world. It brought more attention on the Sustainable Goal 13 (Climate Action) and how young people can contribute to achieving it.
The 2019 Social Good Summit brought together over 500 participants made up of young people, policy makers and influencers, media, climate activists and innovators of climate smart initiatives for constructive dialogue and onward action.
The event was jointly organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Ghana and the Climate Innovation Centre with support from the Forestry Commission, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, the Water Research Institute, GRIPE and some Civil Society Organizations including various innovative businesses.

The 2019 SGS convenes a stakeholder s’ engagement and a panel discussions on Climate Change. It also hosted a Youth in Climate Action Video challenge with winners recognized amidst exhibitions of innovative Climate Smart Solutions and advocacy of Climate Change and Development Goals (SDGs).
