3rd WAPOGA Games: Officials Calls on Corporate Organizations for Support



Prof. Sylvester Achio, President of the West Africa Polytechnic Games Association (WAPOGA) has called on corporate institutions, philanthropists’ and individuals to extend their support in both cash and kind towards a successful third WAPOGA games which Ghana is proud to be a host for the first time since its inception in the year 2000.
 The call has become necessary even on the eve of the opening ceremony which comes off tomorrow July 25, at the Accra Sports Stadium, Prof Achio has indicated.

John Dramani Mahama, Ghana’s President   is expected to officially open the historic 3rd WAPOGA Games at exactly 3pm which comes off at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Prof. Sylvester Achio, also the Rector of Accra Polytechnic made the call on Friday July 24, at the press briefing which took place at the school conference hall in Accra to update Journalists on preparations Ghana has made as the host of the third edition ahead of the actual games scheduled to be officially opened on July, 25. 

"Ladies and gentlemen of the press, let me use this opportunity to appeal to the Corporate Ghana, individuals and philanthropists’ to come to our aid and to make the third WAPOGA Games  a success even on the eve of the opening ceremony which comes off tomorrow " he said.

Professor Sylvester Achio in his address bemoans how in the year 2012 Ghana was fortunate to be chosen as the host of the third edition of the WAPOGA tournament but failed woefully due to financial and logistical constraints.  

He was however elated and announced: “we have been able to overcome some of our major challenges because all the participating countries and the WAPOGA Secretariat were determined to ensure that the Accra 2015 WAPOGA Games comes off.

He congratulated the Government of Ghana, Tico Thermal plants(Takoradi),Central Hotel,Ghana National Petroleum Commission(GNPC),Right Multi Media, St. Flairs Award Award Nigeria Ltd and councils and Chief Executives of member institutions of the WAPOGA community for their support so far towards the event, calling on other corporate organizations to emulate their gesture.

The West Africa Polytechnic Games Association (WAPOGA) started in October, 2012 when some Chief Executives of Polytechnics and Colleges attending a special Summit at Yaba College of Technology in Nigeria agreed to establish the games.

The main objective was to promote the integration of the youth of West African polytechnics and colleges using sports as a vehicle.

As a result, two major games have been held since its inception. It was first hosted
by Nigeria in March 2007 at the Yaba College of Technology.

Cote D’Ivoire hosted the second edition in 2008 at the Institute Nationale Polytechnic-Houphoet Boigny(INP-HB) in Yamoussoukro.

Ghana was chosen to host the third edition in July 2012 but unfortunately  backfired  as a result of financial and logistical challenges.

Prof. Achio noted fifty Polytechnics from eight West African countries were expected in Accra to partake in the games, however, he said the numbers have changed.
Forty-one Polytechnics so far has arrived in the country for the tournament, he said.

They are from Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Senegal, Cote D'Ivoire, Senegal, Mali and Ghana. Those from Benin and Gambia are also expected to join soon.
All the West African Polytechnics have also sent their observers to the 2015 Accra-WAPOGA Games, he disclosed.

The sportsmen and women would compete in a fierce battle for laurels in athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, football, judo, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis and basketball for a period of ten days.

President Sylvester Achio has also commended the Secretary General and his Secretariat including the Task Force and the Local Organizing Committee for their devotion hardwork and commitment towards the successful planning of the tournament.

He lauded the media for their unflinching support in giving the tournament a huge public attention, urging them to extensively rally behind the games and support it to the end by giving it more coverage through reports, features and discussion programmes.  

He was optimistic that Accra Polytechnic will sweep up majority of the trophies at stake so as to emerge victorious and an overall winner of the tournament by all means possible.

The 2015 Accra-WAPOGA Games which is the third edition in a row is on the theme: “Fostering Regional integration through Polytechnic Sports.
