2016 Int. Day of the Girl Child: Students urged to study hard to become responsible adults
Ms. Catherine Ablah Nutsugah- Mikado, Director,
Girls Education Unit of the Ghana Education Service has admonished students especially
girls to study hard in order to become responsible adults in the future.
“You see, most of our dear parents are suffering
today because they didn’t go to school and they’ll continue to suffer if we don’t
take our studies seriously because we are now taking care of our parents that’s
why you must study hard to become responsible adults” .
Ms. Catherine Ablah Nutsugah- Mikado was addressing
scores of school children from both public and private sectors in Accra at a 1-day
sensitization workshop on Adolescent Reproductive Health on Wednesday October
11, 2016.
The sensitization workshop was organized by Adwinsa
Publication (GH) Limited in collaboration with Girls Education Unit of the
Ghana Education Service (GES) to commemorate the United Nations International Day
for the girl- child. The day, which is celebrated annually on October 11, is
used to recognize the unique challenges girls face around the world.
The theme for
this year is, “Providing Quality Higher Level Education for Girls: A right, Not
A Privilege”.
In her remark, Ms. Catherine Ablah Nutsugah- Mikado charged
the students especially the girl-child to be focused in life by taking their
studies seriously so as to become educated and be empowered to face the
positive side of life. “If you are well educated, you’ll overcome
many challenges because you’re informed therefore you have been empowered”.
Ms. Nutsugah Mikado identified some challenges affecting girls’ retention in school which includes
financial constraints at home, inadequate gender friendly sanitary facilities ,
lack of role models in most communities, teenage pregnancy, early marriages and
overburden household chores.
She called on students (girls) who are faced with
problems not to feel shy but rather be bold to first report to their teachers
or headteachers and when not solved, they should feel free and approach education
officers in the country for assistance.
Ms. Nutsugah Mikado appealed to the media to shift
its attention from excessive political reporting and concentrate on education girls
so they can grow up to become useful citizens in the country.
Ms. Gloria
Sarkodie, a nurse from Dodowa Hospital who spoke copiously on a topic “How to
maintain personal hygiene whiles menstruating” cautioned girls against the use of
antiseptic, soaps, liquids or any form of vagina washing substances for
cleaning their private parts since that has a tendency of destroying the
God-given vagina.
According to her, God in his own wisdom has made the vagina with
juices which it automatically releases for cleansing whenever it becomes dirty
therefore there’s no need using chemicals to wash since it will only destroy it
and therefore advised they use ordinary
water for cleansing which she termed the hygienic way.
Ms. Sarkodie appealed to teachers to set up
adolescent corner in the schools to help the girl child get help whenever they
are faced with adolescent health issues. She also called on parents to show
concern and educate their wards vigorously on adolescent health issues in order
to take help the burden from their
shoulders so they can feel free to
concentrate on their studies each time.
Meanwhile, the Greater Accra Regional Girls
Education Officer, Miss Christiana Ayinzoya has called for all hands on deck towards
the removal of every barrier on the way of the girl-child to enable her attain
