Parliament urged to condemn distasteful comments by Ken Agyapong against EC Chair
Parliament has been urged to strongly come out and condemn
the scalding comments made by Mr. Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament for
Assin Central against the EC Chair, Charlotte Osei suggesting she got her
position through sexual favour and not on merit.
The call has been made at a press briefing in Accra on
Monday, July 11 2016 by the Greater Accra Queen Mothers Association (GAQA) to
add their voice to numerous calls from individuals, groups and gender advocates
in the country who has condemned the act insisting parliament take quick action
to call the beleaguered legislator to order.
The association says it has found those ‘comments
unacceptable, to be in a very bad taste especially coming from someone holding
a noble and honorable position in our country’ and unequivocally condemned it,
calling on the Speaker of Parliament and the NPP to do same without fear or
favour.
It said that it has also found Mr. Agyapong’s comments ‘appalling because it does not only seek to put the good name of Mrs.
Charlotte Osei in disrepute but also suggest that no woman in Ghana can hold any position of power on merit
alone’.
“We therefore condemn the distasteful comments made against
Mrs. Charlotte Osei and urge all discerning men and women to do same.
The
comments are affront to the dignity of hard working women everywhere. It is
time to take action therefore we appeal to the Speaker of Parliament and to his
party on whose platform he made those distasteful statements to come out to
strongly condemn it” said the queen mothers association.
The legislator on June 28 2016 at a mini rally in Asokwa
made the contentious comment suggesting Mrs. Charlotte Osei got her position through
sexual favors to some power brokers.
Since those statements were made, it has generated a huge public outcry with most people condemning the act calling on him to apologize and retract it which has not yet yielded any result.
