MEDIA URGED TO SENSITIZE PUBLIC ON THE IMPORTANCE OF BREASTFEEDING

Dr Maame Yaa Nyarko, Vice President of the Paediatric Society of Ghana, has called for media support in educating public especially nursing mothers on the importance of breastfeeding in the country.

According to her the media is a powerful tool for information dissemination and therefore has a   critical role to play in educating the public on issues pertaining to health “since most people are unaware of the right things so they do the wrong things” she stressed.

She was addressing Journalists at the Philips AVENT 30th Anniversary and maiden edition of the “Baby of the Year Competition 2014” launch in Accra yesterday

Dr Maame Yaa Nyarko who is also a lecturer cum Paediatrician at the Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital equally underscored the need for mothers to feed their babies with breast milk only for the first six months.

According to her, no solid food, water or formula should be given to babies for at least the first six months.

This, she said, will help reduce obesity in children and provide them with essential and adequate nutrients at the right temperature.  She added that it will also help to improve the intelligence of the children and protect them against diseases. 

Dr Nyarko also called for “breast feeding centres” to be set up at Churches, supermarkets, workplaces and other public places to enable babies enjoy “six months exclusive breastfeeding”.

  In a bid to help end the kidnappings as well as the burgeoning human rights and social issues in Ghana and beyond, the Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) in 2019 embarked on a ‘Nationwide Sensitization Campaign on Kidnapping, Teenage, Pregnancy and Tramadol/Drug Abuse’ (KTT). The campaign, popularly known as the ‘KTT Project’, focused on addressing issues of kidnapping, teenage pregnancy and drug abuse but equally set about creating a deeper education on human rights to bring about a cultural change.
