Final year teacher trainees sound warning to gov’t

 Final year training teachers in the western and central sector (WEC Sector) have reminded government to put in place measures to ensure that they do not suffer same fate as field teachers over salaries. The warning comes in the wake of non-payment of teacher allowances  To this end, they are calling on government to immediately get them registered at the Controller and Accountant General’s Department in order to receive their salaries immediately after posting. The trainees - billed to complete school at the end of July - made these sentiments known in a statement released on Friday, May 20. “We are therefore by this release petitioning the government to put in place visible measures to register level 300 teacher trainees at the Controller and Accountant General's department immediately, so we can receive our salaries as early as possible when we are posted,” the statement said. Three students of   the Ghana Institute of Journalism(GIJ) who distinguished themselves in the fields of journalism and media, leadership and entrepreneurship have been honored by Sparkplug Ghana, a student group championing the cause of leadership and academic excellence in GIJ.   The honor was conferred on them at an event dubbed ‘GIJ maiden campus clique awards’ held at the school campus on Friday April 1, 2016   on the theme: Education, Leadership and Service.  The awardees were nominated in  three categories; the most Influential student media personnel (Diploma and Degree Levels) the most entrepreneurial student (Degree Levels 200 & 300), and the most Influential student for Diploma and Degree level only before eventually been selected as winners. The School of Graduate Studies under the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) on Friday 18 th March, 2016  graduated its first batch of ninety students who have successfully completed 15-months master degrees programmes in Journalism, Public Relations, Media Management and Development Communication at the forecourt of   the school in Osu, Accra. Out of the ninety-nine students admitted to start their programme of study in October 2014, 90 of them have been honored with postgraduate degrees within their chosen four areas of discipline.   Eight of these graduands offered journalism, whilst 15 of them read Media M anagement, Public Relations -27 and Development Communication 30.   In all fifty-three (53) of these graduands are male whilst 37 are females.
