Gov’t should reduce taxes on electricity tariffs-ACEP




Gov't  has been urged to as a matter of urgency fulfill its promise of removing taxes on electricity tariffs in order to bring immediate relief to households and industries in the country.

 The appeal was made by the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP, an energy policy think tank at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, January 19, 2016.

ACEP’s Deputy Executive Director, Benjamin Boakye addressing the press noted the immediate removal of 17.5% by the ruling NPP gov’t would not only ease the burden of households but would go a long way to improve the cash flow of businesses and their productivity.

The Akuffo-Addo led ruling NPP government in its 2016 manifesto promised to reduce electricity tariffs to provide immediate relief to households and industry when voted into power.

But weeks after taking over the reins of government nothing concrete has yet been done to see the fulfillment of the policy into a reality. 

ACEP  has also called on gov’t to diversify the energy mix through renewables and options that rely on domestic fuel supply. The renewable energy act provides incentive for deployment of renewable technologies such as solar, biomass and mini hydro. According to ACEP, government in fulfillment of its promise should increase the proportion of renewable energy in the national energy mix, clarify the incentives, simplify processes and encourage investment in these technologies to reduce reliance on importation of fuel for power generation.

The conference, being ACEP’s first initiative of 2017since the ruling NPP ascends the throne was to fraternize with the media to help point out effective energy policy direction to government towards realization of stable electricity power supply for the benefit of the county.
