GIJ launches 2016 women's week celebration


The Student's Representative Council of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) under the auspices of its Women’s Commission has launched the 2016 women’s week celebration with much emphasis on educating students on abortion.
This year's event which is on the theme: ‘Abortion and the Tertiary Student’ comes with varieties of fun-packed activities lined-up to whip up students attention towards successful week celebration.

Highly tipped on the events calendar are line-up of interesting activities like clean-up exercise and food bazaar which comes off at the school campus on Thursday, April 21 followed by fashion show, trade fair and Pre- party on April 22. 

The celebration will be climaxed with a delightful night show to crown the next ‘Face of GIJ‘for 2016 at the Alisa Hotel  in Accra on April 23.

Speaking at the launch, Head of Marketing Department for GIJ, Mrs. Rodaline Amartey advised the students to concentrate their minds solely on studies for now and avoid any pre-marital activities likely to mar their future. “For now you are in school to learn, make sure you learn, when you finish with the school, and then you can take care of other things”.

Chairperson of the Youth Advisory Board for IPAS, Richard Mawutor Dzikunu cautioned the students against unsafe abortion practices, adding the barbaric act could lead to premature death thereby destroying their future. 

He advised them to always endeavor to seek help from health practitioners before taking any such decisions in an event they become pregnant.

Meanwhile, the Women’s Commissioner of GIJ, Dora Badu Acheampong has entreated all students regardless of their sexes to show interest and fully partake in all the activities lined-up for the celebration. 

According to her, no student can afford to miss out on the vast education centered on demystifying the mysteries surrounding abortion within tertiary schools in Ghana. 

The Women’s week celebration activities are being organized by GIJ SRC and proudly supported by Joy Industries, Guinness Ghana, Daviva, Indomie, Alisa Hotel, Kofi Ababio and Sons, Vaettel, Darling and Collen Makeup. 
 The launch which took place at the school campus on Wednesday, April 20 also saw the unveiling of the final 9 contestants who are currently battling for the crown as the next Face of GIJ, and cash prize of GH₵ 2, 000 including other fantastic rewards.
